Welcome

Welcome to class -- and thanks for signing up for this online course. For many of you, this may be your first online (on the Internet) course, so we'll use the entire class today to discuss the course, get acquainted with a few simple computer operations, and poke around a little to see how things will work. If you are not a computer wiz, don't worry -- you won't need to be. From a computer standpoint, absolutely everything is simple. By the time you leave class today, you'll know almost everything needed to navigate this course though Canvas.

 A. COURSE DESCRIPTION A course designed for, but not restricted to, undecided students and persons in career transition. Includes self-exploration, career exploration and job search strategies. Specific topics include adult development theory and the changes that occur over the lifespan, extensive exploration and assessment of one's skills, values, interests and personality, analysis of career possibilities to determine individual fit, introduction to resources for educational and career planning, an intensive career investigation, decision making, goal setting and motivation, and job search and interview techniques. (CSU) (Degree Credit)

ALL major assignments must be successfully completed in

order to pass the course with other assignments to give you the grade desired-this includes: Strong Interest Inventory and Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator results; Research and Reference List (=Works Cited page or Bibliography).  Assignment= Resume and Cover Letter in assigned format; Field Survey Report with Information Interview

 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of COUN 151 F, the student will be able to:

  • produce a resume in an assigned format.
  • research a specific career, then state and explain conclusions about fit.

D. COURSE PARTICIPATION SUMMARY:

In addition to attending and participating in Orientation reading text chapters & materials posted online, completing textbook exercises and online assessments, researching online (and if desired also on campus), information interviewing, writing integrative papers, and completing and submitting assignments to the instructor in Canvas…students must log in, read announcements, and post to discussions each week. Assignments are posted between Friday and Monday of each week. All Assignments are due every Monday by midnight of the following week. For example if I post an Assignment in by Monday August 28th that Assignment will be due by Monday September 4th by midnight.

 

E. TO ACCESS Canvas:

Course materials and tools are on “Canvas” our course management system.

Course “tools” are links on the “Course Tools Menu”, on the left side of the screen after

you log in and enter the course in Canvas.

Go to links on far left side of screen on www.fullcoll.edu and click on

“Canvas” to access the log in screen and follow on-screen instructions.

will be listed to make it easy for you to keep track of what is due each week and

F. ONLINE LEARNING A malfunctioning home computer is not an excuse for not logging in each week or for not completing assignments by deadlines. Late work may not be accepted. It is your responsibility to take the time to learn how to participate in the course and get help before deadlines pass!

Online courses parallel traditional in-class courses in requirements and evaluation.

To take this course you must know how to use a computer for word processing, email, and to access and navigate the Internet. Basic computing skills instruction will NOT be

provided & computer/internet access is your responsibility! Registered students can

access the Canvas platform (this is where you will log on to participate in this

course) through a web browser. Additional information on browser settings and

access to technical support available online (see Distance Learning homepage).

Canvas provides a 24/7 support team that specifically supports Fullerton College.

Faculty and students can also click on the Help icon inside Canvas to find this number, chat, or email support.

 The Canvas software you will use resides on a Canvas server (a central host

computer). However, you will need to have Microsoft Word or another word processing

program and Internet access on your home computer, or on a computer you have

access to every week. You may need to use the computer resources on the Fullerton College (FC) campus. Rooms 2200A/B are computer labs available for currently registered students with ID cards. The FC Library also has computers for student use.

 

This is a 3-credit CSU transferable college course that meets the Area E General

Education requirement. The workload will be equivalent to that of a traditional college

course (10 to 15 hours per week over 16 weeks)!
